A History of the Honda Accord

The history of the Accord started in 1976 when Honda decided to offer a hatchback model larger than the popular compact Civic. Those first-generation Accords established the name while delivering a vehicle with a fuel-efficient engine and front-wheel drive; this was unique since many cars came with a rear-wheel drivetrain. Honda chose to equip it with an I-4 gas engine with a choice of manual and automatic transmission. The four-cylinder engine helped improve fuel economy, beating many other similar models that had a less fuel-efficient V6 or V8 engine. The Accord even featured service reminders and warning lights for unclosed doors—both novel safety features at the time.

In 1979, Honda decided to make a bold move, offering the Accord in an optional four-door sedan style. At the time, most automakers were offering at least one model in the sedan class. It was audacious, considering the competition, but Honda decided to apply its expertise in affordable and fuel-efficient vehicles to a midsize sedan with the comfort and convenience features drivers expect in such models. Basing this sedan off of the already successful Accord hatchback gave Honda a leg up.

After the success of the Honda Accord sedan, the company decided to roll out a second-gen model in 1982. Honda still offered the model as a four-door sedan or two-door hatchback. However, Honda increased the wheelbase, making the five-passenger interior roomier than ever. The exterior was made slightly more aerodynamic than the first generation, which had a boxier appearance. This attention to sleekness was taken a step further in the third-gen Accord, with its retractable headlights. That model also saw the first Accord coupe in 1988; it would prove to be popular, especially with drivers looking for a sportier Accord.

For the fourth-generation Accord introduced in 1990, the brand finally said farewell to the two-door hatchback that had introduced the model back in 1976. Honda also gave the Accord a more powerful engine, replacing the 2.0-liter I-4 engine with a 2.2-liter I-4; this boosted performance without hurting the fuel economy that had always been a hallmark of the Accord.

Honda continued to improve the Accord's performance. The fifth generation premiered in 1994 with a more rounded appearance. It also added a short-lived four-door wagon design to the coupe and sedan. However, the most significant breakthroughs came with the engines. The 1994 Accord was the first to feature Honda's VTEC system, a form of variable valve timing; this reduced fuel consumption at lower speeds by shutting down valves to improve efficient performance. In 1995, Honda started offering the first V6 gas engine on the Accord, a 2.7-liter V6 with 24 valves and a dual overhead camshafts design (DOHC)—another first for the Accord. Honda also began offering an anti-lock braking system on the Accord to improve passenger safety.

For a new millennium, Honda chose to move the Accord in a bold direction. The styling became extremely aerodynamic, while the engine options on the seventh-gen Accord continued to improve performance. However, the most significant innovation was the inclusion of side-curtain and front-side airbags on all versions of the Accord. Honda was putting safety first on its midsize sedan model. With the eighth-gen Accord in 2008, new standard safety equipment was added, such as Vehicle Stability Assist. By 2010, the Accord would become the best-selling midsize sedan in America; this was due in large part to its excellent fuel economy, solid design, high quality, and affordable price.

The seventh generation of the Accord also featured the first hybrid engine offered on the model, pairing a V6 gas engine with an electric motor in the front axle. However, this hybrid option was discontinued for the eighth-gen model. Instead, the Accord Hybrid joined the lineup as a separate model in 2014 during the ninth generation. Unlike the prior version, the standalone Hybrid used an I-4 gas engine instead of a V6, providing better overall fuel economy. As a result, the Accord Hybrid would become more popular than its predecessor, remaining an option for Accord drivers to this day.

For the tenth-gen Accord, Honda discontinued the V6 gas engine and the coupe version. Going forward, the Accord would feature a turbocharged I-4 gas engine in a stylish sedan design. In addition, the tech improved on both Accord builds, with the Honda Sensing suite of active driver assistance features and the HondaLink infotainment systems becoming standard. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto would become featured in 2021, just before the introduction of the eleventh generation in 2023. This latest model would increase the touchscreen to a massive width while offering Google Built-In—and with all of this technological innovation, the Accord would continue to offer drivers unmatched fuel economy figures.
