The Honda Civic has been proudly furnishing families’ transportation needs since 1972. It’s carved out a loyal following because of its reliability, consistency, and efficiency, all wrapped up in an affordable and stylish package. Year after year, people come back for this legendary nameplate and there is always something new to attract attention.
Honda has a commitment to innovation that keeps the Civic fresh and modern despite its often utilitarian reputation. Folks savvy enough to be looking for a Honda Civic for sale in 2024 will again find themselves with the option of either a sedan-style Civic or a hatchback. Both of these offer some unique features and will cater to different needs.
In this buyer’s guide, we’ll take a look at the Honda Civic as a whole, as well as the differences between the hatchback and sedan versions.
Design and Style
The 2024 Honda Civic has a low and wide look that immediately clues the viewer into what it is. Expansive glass windows add to the exterior styling as well as the roomy and airy interior. LED headlights come standard on every trim level of the 2024 Civic, helping to keep your visibility crystal clear and fitting in nicely with the big city lights, which is fitting as this car is designed to have a sporty appeal for urban settings.
It comes with standard 16-inch steel wheels that can be upgraded on different trim levels to 17- or 18-inch wheels with different black inserts for added appeal. Certain design features are only available on higher-level trims. For example, if you’re interested in getting a power moonroof to make your night-time drives extra memorable, check out the EX or Touring trims on the sedan style or the EX-L and Sport Touring trims on the hatchback style.
The inside of the 2024 Honda Civic is characterized by its driver-focused dashboard and intuitive layout. Every new Honda Civic has a push-to-start button, so don’t be surprised when there’s nowhere to insert a key! Comfortable and supportive seats make the Civic an ideal choice for anyone who does a lot of commuting or simply plans to take a few road trips. You can seat up to five people in the Honda Civic, so there’s plenty of room for small families!
Cargo Space
Cargo capacity is different depending on the style of Civic you choose. It’s important to note that you don’t sacrifice any seating area if you choose to go with the hatchback style, even though the exterior body dimensions don’t change; the additional cargo area is due to clever engineering and not a diminished seating area. The drawback is slightly reduced aerodynamics, but mostly, the choice between hatchback and sedan comes down to personal preference.
In the sedan-style Civic, you get between 14.4 and 14.8 cu.ft. of space. This is plenty for the busy individual who predominantly uses their car for commuting or running around town. If you have a more frequent need to haul luggage or gear around, the hatchback style gives you 24.5 cu.ft. of cargo area with the seats in their upright position. When you fold the rear seats down, this creates even more room!
Performance
Performance specifications on the 2024 Honda Civic vary depending on the style and trim you select. It’s worth noting that if you want to get your new Honda Civic equipped with a manual transmission, you’ll need to choose the hatchback style. Otherwise, either Honda Civic comes standard with a CVT in front-wheel drive.
There are four engines to choose from, each with its own blend of fuel efficiency and power. The first base-level engine is a 2.0L I-4 engine that creates 158 hp and 138 lb-ft of torque. With this engine, you can expect to get about 31 MPG in the city and 40 MPG on the highway in the sedan; in the hatchback, you’ll get 30 MPG in the city and 38 MPG on the highway with the CVT or 26 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the highway with the six-speed manual.
If you choose to upgrade to the next level of power, you can choose the 1.5L Turbo I-4 engine. This engine delivers 180 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque. It also gets slightly better fuel efficiency, coming in at 33 MPG in the city and 42 MPG on the highway with the sedan. With the hatchback, you’ll get 31 MPG in the city and 39 MPG on the highway with the CVT or 28 MPG in the city and 37 MPG on the highway with the six-speed manual.
Next are two unique engine options for the sedan or the hatchback, and they constitute the highest performance for each. For the sedan-style Civic, the top-tier engine is another 1.5L Turbo I-4 engine that is only available on the Si trim. This engine creates 200 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque. As for fuel efficiency, you’ll get 27 MPG in the city and 37 MPG on the highway.
The top engine option for the hatchback is a 2.0L Turbo I-4 engine, which is only available on the Type R trim. This engine pumps out an impressive 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. Note that this engine is only available with a manual transmission, so if you don’t drive stick, you’ll want to pass this one up! With it, you can expect to get 26 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the highway.
Features
All 2024 Honda Civics will come with an array of features that make it a joy to drive. One of our favorite features included in the Civic is actually a bundle of tech under the umbrella of the Honda Sensing driver assistance suite. This is an advanced array of safety systems that employ cameras and sensors to keep you and your passengers safe while on the road.
Every Honda Civic comes standard with a 160-watt audio system with four speakers, and this can be upgraded to a 180-watt system with eight speakers. If that isn’t enough concert-inspired power, the top trim levels of the 2024 Civic come equipped with a Bose Premium Sound System with twelve speakers, including a subwoofer!
Staying connected while on the road is a key attribute we hear from car buyers all the time. Luckily, every new Civic comes standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto! This means you can access your favorite apps for streaming music, navigating, and connecting via voice or chat no matter where the road takes you!
This is all accessed via the 7.0- or 9.0-inch digital infotainment screen conveniently located in the center console. If you’ve opted for the highest-level trims, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are even wireless-enabled, so you will never need to struggle with finding your USB outlet again.
